Belize supports UN resolution on lifting US Embargo on Cuba

By Zoila Palma:  The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for an end to the United States’ economic, trade, and financial embargo against Cuba, with Belize voting in favour.

The resolution received 130 votes in support, 17 against, and 25 abstentions, marking its weakest backing since 1995. The annual vote comes as Washington intensifies pressure on Cuba through sanctions and restrictions that have further strained the island’s economy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the country’s position remains rooted in its longstanding foreign policy principles.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry Oscar Arnold, explained Belize’s decision to continue supporting the resolution, noting that every country has the right to determine its own vote. “Belize’s foreign policy remains grounded on some very basic principles, and so that is why we continue to support the lifting of the embargo and the sanctions,” Arnold said.

Arnold acknowledged that support for the resolution has shifted over the years, with more countries abstaining or voting against it. “I really can’t speak to why other countries would vote the way they do, but we have noted that over the years, there has been a few more abstentions and even a few more votes going against it,” he said.

The vote comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Cuba and the United States, with Cuban officials accusing Washington of pressuring other countries to withdraw their support for the resolution.
