By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize endured their fifth consecutive loss in the XV U19 Central American Men’s Volleyball Championship, falling to Costa Rica in a decisive 3-0 match (25-14, 25-12, 25-15) on Friday at the FESAVOL Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador. Belize have had a very challenging tournament and have only one game left to secure a victory.

Costa Rica dominated the match from the outset, leading in attack points (40-21), blocks (7-1), and serves (2-1). Belize’s 26 unforced errors compared to Costa Rica’s 18 further contributed to their defeat.

Ignacio Morales and Jeremy Vanega led the offensive for Costa Rica, scoring 15 and 13 points respectively. For Belize, Daniel Musa was the standout player, contributing 8 points.

Despite Belize’s loss, Costa Rica’s captain, Edser Barrantes, praised Belize’s resilience and efforts.

“We have to congratulate Belize; they have a great team and never stop fighting with very tall players,” Barrantes told AFECAVOL after the match.

Belize’s captain, Lawrence Mahler, acknowledged Costa Rica’s strength and reflected on the team’s improvements.

“Costa Rica are a very good team, a team that makes you want to keep fighting, attacking a lot. We have improved as a team, and against Costa Rica, we did things quite well. We hope to continue like this in our next game,” Mahler said

With this win, Costa Rica secures a place on the podium with a 5-1 record, but their final position will depend on the outcomes of matches involving Panama, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

Belize will have one last opportunity to earn a win when they face Honduras in their final match of the tournament on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 2:00 pm.

In other Friday matches, Guatemala overcame Nicaragua 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21), and Panama defeated El Salvador 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-17), putting Panama one step closer to securing the championship title with their fifth consecutive victory. A win on Saturday over Guatemala, gives Panama the Central American crown.
