The U16 Belize Boys National Team (BBNT) wrapped up group play at the 2025 UNCAF FIFA Forward U16 Boys Tournament with a 6–1 loss to El Salvador on Monday morning at the Centro Deportivo Ernesto Villa in Guatemala City.
Despite entering the match with hopes of climbing to third in Group B, Belize were outpaced by a determined El Salvador side that capitalized on key moments and surged ahead with a flurry of goals.
El Salvador opened the scoring in the 29th minute through Paolo Tornberg, who broke the deadlock after a tightly contested opening half-hour. Just four minutes later, captain Mayson Barillas doubled the lead with a well-placed finish in the 33rd minute.
Belize responded with their first goal of the tournament in the 39th minute, shortly after El Salvador’s second, as Marlon Meza Jr. fired a left-footed shot from outside the 18-yard box, cutting the deficit to 2–1 and injecting fresh energy into the match. However, El Salvador quickly regained control.
Gabriel Sorto restored the two-goal cushion in the 43rd minute just before halftime, followed by Barillas’ second goal in the 48th minute. Esteban Hernández added a fifth in the 56th minute, and Byron Murgas sealed the result with a sixth goal in the 67th minute.
The loss leaves Belize at the bottom of Group B with three defeats and a –11 goal difference, sending them to the 7th-place match. El Salvador, with their first win, move to third and will contest the 5th-place match.
Group B Standings:
- Honduras – 6 pts (7 GF, 2 GA, +5 GD)
- Costa Rica – 6 pts (5 GF, 0 GA, +5 GD)
- El Salvador – 3 pts (8 GF, 7 GA, +1 GD)
- Belize – 0 pts (1 GF, 12 GA, –11 GD)
While the BBNT’s tournament run has been challenging, today’s goal marks a moment of pride for the young squad. They’ll look to close out their campaign with heart in the upcoming 7th-place match against Panama on Tuesday.
