By Aaron Humes: Cabinet has announced that, in a significant step towards enhancing its intellectual property framework, Belize has officially acceded to five major copyright-related treaties administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This move aims to bolster the rights of creators and foster a more robust creative economy in the country.
The treaties include the International Convention for the Protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organizations; the WIPO Copyright Treaty; the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty; the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances; and the Marrakesh Treaty, which facilitates access to published works for individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or otherwise print disabled.
Cabinet has instructed the commencement of a comprehensive review of the nation’s domestic copyright legislation. The objective is to ensure that local laws are fully aligned with the obligations set forth by these international agreements, thereby affirming Belize’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights.
In related news, the Cabinet has also approved Belize as the host for a Regional Intellectual Property Workshop scheduled for March 2026. This regional event will focus on promoting international intellectual property treaties and strengthening IP frameworks in alignment with the CARIFORUM/EU and UK Economic Partnership Agreements.
The Government of Belize recognizes that by enhancing its intellectual property regime, it can better support its artists, creators, and industries in navigating the global market, ultimately benefiting the economy and society as a whole.
