Press Release
On Monday, December 16, 2024, the Government of Belize acceded to the InterAmerican Convention on the Protection of Human Rights of Older Persons. This significant step reaffirms the country’s dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of its senior citizens.
The Convention, adopted by the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2015, aims to guarantee the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms for individuals aged 60 and older. It encompasses a wide range of rights, including equality, independence, community participation, access to healthcare, social security, and political participation. Belize becomes the first English-speaking Caribbean Territory to accede to the convention.
H.E. Lynn Young, Ambassador of Belize to the United States and Permanent Representative of Belize to the OAS, said, “By joining this Convention, Belize reaffirms its dedication to human rights at every stage of life. We are fostering a society that values and protects its citizens, ensuring that aging is not a period of vulnerability but an opportunity for continued contribution, respect, and personal fulfilment.”
The National Council on Ageing and The Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous People’s Affairs celebrates this definitive step towards the protection and inclusion of older persons. We acknowledge the support of all our partners and thank them for their continuous support throughout this process.
