By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize pulled off one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the Concacaf U20 Championship on Friday, rallying from a 2–0 halftime deficit to defeat French Guiana 3–2 in Managua.
French Guiana struck in the 18th and 38th minutes through Rayann Boyce and Davy Fernand, putting Belize under early pressure and sending the U20 side into the break with work to do. Belize, however, responded with urgency and belief in the second half.
Forward Oscar Carranza, who had created at least three clear opportunities earlier in the match, was finally brought down in the penalty area in the 59th minute. Eddie Williams converted the spot kick in the 60th minute to ignite the comeback.
Belize continued pressing and were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Breyden Olivas finished confidently to level the match at 2–2. The momentum stayed with the U20 Jaguars, and deep into injury time, Calvin Thurton completed the comeback with a composed strike in the 90+3rd minute, sealing a memorable 3–2 victory.
The win lifts Belize to six points after three matches, keeping them firmly in contention in Group A.
In the day’s other results, St. Martin, despite going down to ten men, shocked Suriname 2–1, while El Salvador defeated Grenada 2–0 to maintain their perfect record.
