By Zoila Palma: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson delivered remarks on November 21 at a ceremony celebrating the achievements of the Solar-Powered Sugarcane Irrigation Project.
He highlighted the initiative as a model of what can be accomplished when Belize’s agricultural vision aligns with international partnerships and farmer-driven innovation. Designed to transform production in the country’s sugarcane heartland, the project aims to help Fairtrade-certified small-scale growers transition from carbon-intensive electricity to locally generated solar power paired with advanced drip irrigation technology.
Four producer groups—the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA), Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA), Northern Sugar Cane Growers Association (NSCGA), and Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCPA)—participated in the initiative.
The project integrates solar energy systems, efficient fertigation, precision data collection, and improved disease and pest management.
These advancements not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also strengthen the foundations of food security and support rural livelihoods. Each association received specialized technical assistance and capacity building through the Sugar Industry Research & Development Institute (SIRDI).
Minister Ferguson extended his appreciation to the producer associations, Fairtrade International, CLAC, SIRDI, and other partners whose collaboration made the project possible. He also commended the farmers whose commitment and initiative helped drive the effort forward.
The ceremony was also attended by Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Alex Balona.
