The article, titled “In Belize, Maya Descendants Are Reviving an Ancient, Sacred Ballgame,” explores the cultural resurgence of pok-ta-pok, the world’s oldest known team sport, and Belize’s push to make it the national game.

“We don’t see it just as sports,” says Jonathan Sosa, a Belizean player. “Pok-ta-pok is going to be a big deal for us.”
Cultural advocate Felicita Cantun, shown performing a ritual with copal smoke at the site, leads the effort to reclaim this Maya tradition nearly lost during Spanish colonization.
Melissa Badillo, Director of Belize’s Institute of Archaeology, is also featured, reinforcing the game’s archaeological importance.
