By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Government of Belize has extended its solidarity to the people of Guyana, as a massive search-and-rescue operation continues off the South American nation’s coast following a ferry disaster that has gripped the Caribbean.
According to the official statement issued from Belmopan, late on Saturday, July 18, 2026, a ferry which departed from Georgetown, Guyana, carrying one hundred and sixteen passengers and seventeen crew members, capsized in rough waves. The latest reports indicate that sixty-seven persons have been rescued, while a massive search-and-rescue effort remains underway for those who are still missing.
On behalf of the people of Belize, Prime Minister John Briceño and the Government of Belize extended prayers of hope for the safe rescue of those still missing off the coast of Guyana, and offered comfort to the families awaiting the return of their loved ones.
“The thoughts of the people of Belize are with the people of Guyana as they grapple with this tragedy,” the statement read.
The Government’s message follows a statement of solidarity issued earlier by Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar-Panton on behalf of the United Democratic Party, meaning Belize’s leadership across the political divide now stands united in support of Guyana, a fellow CARICOM member state with deep ties to Belize.
The vessel, identified in international reporting as the ferry MV Barima, was travelling from the capital toward Port Kaituma when disaster struck, plunging everyone aboard into the sea. Among the sixty-seven rescued are men, women, and children, but for the families of the dozens still unaccounted for, the wait continues with each passing hour.
Belize joins the wider Caribbean family in holding Guyana close, and in hoping that the sea returns more survivors to the arms of those who wait.
