By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belizeans can expect another day of mostly fair weather as a moderate north to northwesterly airflow continues to dominate the region.
Conditions will remain mostly sunny through the morning, but forecasters are expecting isolated showers and thunderstorms to increase later this evening. The weather activity will ease overnight, remaining mostly offshore by early Thursday.
Winds will continue to blow from the north and northwest at 10 to 20 knots, keeping sea conditions moderate. The Belize Met Service reports that coastal temperatures will reach highs of 85 degrees Fahrenheit today, with inland areas warming up to 88 degrees and the hills remaining cooler at 77 degrees. Overnight lows are expected to drop to 74 degrees on the coast and 70 inland.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Melissa has weakened to a Category 2 storm as it moves across eastern Cuba. At 6:00 a.m., the storm was centered near latitude 20.6 North and longitude 75.7 West, about 45 miles northwest of Guantánamo. Melissa is moving toward the north-northeast at 14 miles per hour with sustained winds near 105 miles per hour. The National Meteorological Service has confirmed that the system poses no threat to Belize.
Looking ahead, forecasters say a cold front is approaching the western Caribbean and will bring slightly cooler temperatures and light rain by Thursday. While the rest of today remains mostly dry and pleasant, residents can expect more cloud cover late tonight as the front draws nearer.
