By Aaron Humes: September 2025 brought a slight increase in the national inflation rate for Belize, with the All-Items Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising to 120.5, up from 119.7 in the same month last year. This 0.6 percent rise reflects a modest shift in pricing across various sectors, according to the latest report from the Statistical Institute of Belize.
The inflation rate was primarily driven by increases in essential categories such as ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels,’ ‘Restaurants and Accommodation Services,’ and ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages.’ However, the ‘Transport’ sector saw a notable decline, attributed to falling fuel prices compared to last September.
The category of ‘Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ recorded an inflation rate of 2.5 percent. This increase was largely due to a rise in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which surged by $13.49, bringing the average cost of a 100-pound cylinder to $130.07. Additionally, home rental prices increased by 2.1 percent from the previous year.
In the realm of dining and hospitality, ‘Restaurants and Accommodation Services’ saw a 2.8 percent uptick, largely driven by higher prices for restaurant and café services. The ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category recorded a modest increase of 0.4 percent overall, spurred primarily by a 3.5 percent rise in prices for non-alcoholic drinks, including a significant 5.0 percent hike in purified water costs.
Health-related expenses also saw a significant increase, with the ‘Health’ category experiencing a 3.8 percent inflation rate due to rising costs for doctors’ consultations and medicinal products. Meanwhile, the ‘Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services’ category rose by 1.7 percent, influenced by higher prices for personal hygiene items.
Contrastingly, the transportation sector experienced a decline of 1.8 percent, reflecting lower fuel prices. The average price for regular gasoline dropped by $0.63 per gallon, contributing to decreased costs across the board in this category. This downturn came at a time when the ‘Information and Communication’ sector also dipped by 1.5 percent, driven by lower prices for mobile telephone equipment.
