Belize sees historic decline in murders in 2023; Hitting lowest levels in decades

Posted: Wednesday, January 3, 2024. 6:10 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belize ended 2023 with a marked decrease in its murder rate, recording the lowest figures since 2000, according to official data. The year’s total count of murders was 85, the lowest since 2005, highlighting a shift in public safety trends in the country.

The final weekend of the year saw two gun-related deaths, with Jorge Caceres Lozano’s case identified as a murder, while Trevor Brown’s death remains under investigation, considered possibly an act of self-defense. A conclusive verdict is expected from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

These incidents notwithstanding, Belize’s murder rate per 100,000 residents dropped to 19.1. This reduction in violent crime rates reflects positively on the country’s law enforcement and public safety efforts, especially considering Belize’s historical struggle with high crime rates.
