By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize is working to reduce trade costs, strengthen local businesses and expand export opportunities following a three-day World Trade Organization (WTO) follow-up mission held in Belmopan from November 3 to 5, 2026.
The mission was hosted through the Directorate General for Foreign Trade and brought together government agencies, private-sector representatives and development partners to identify ways to improve the country’s trade environment.
The discussions built on Belize’s fourth WTO Trade Policy Review conducted in May 2026, identifying key areas requiring technical assistance, institutional strengthening and future investment in trade infrastructure.
Among the priorities is a potential second phase of Belize’s Electronic Single Window for Trade, which aims to simplify trade procedures, improve coordination among regulatory agencies and reduce the time and costs associated with doing business.
Other areas identified for improvement include strengthening customs and border management, upgrading standards and certification services, and building the capacity of Belizean businesses to access international markets.
These measures are expected to help local enterprises become more competitive and improve their ability to participate in international trade.
The findings will guide Belize’s future engagement with development partners to mobilise resources, modernise trade systems and support investment and economic growth.
