The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration announces that Taiwan has officially approved the export of shrimp from Belize. The confirmation was delivered today, July 30, 2025, to Chief Executive Officer H.E. Amalia Mai and the Belizean delegation during the Second Meeting of the Administrative Commission under the Belize–Taiwan Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA), held in Taiwan.
This milestone follows over two years of technical cooperation and regulatory engagement between Belize’s competent authorities and Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (TFDA). The process began in 2022 with the submission of Taiwan’s Equivalence Evaluation Questionnaire and included multiple rounds of documentation, verification, and an in-country inspection by Taiwan’s technical team in October 2024.
Twelve Belizean aquaculture facilities have now been approved for export following a comprehensive risk assessment conducted by the TFDA. Belize’s aquatic products have successfully passed Taiwan’s systematic inspection procedure, and exports may commence on July 30, 2025.
As a result, Belize now has access to a high-value market that imported an average of over USD 349 million in shrimp annually between 2020 and 2024. Belize’s shrimp industry has remained resilient in recent years, despite global and regional challenges, maintaining consistent production and export activity. With this new market access, producers are well-positioned to scale up operations and unlock even greater value through renewed investment and market-driven growth.
Following today’s announcement, the Belizean delegation also met with Yen & Brothers Company Limited, Taiwan’s largest seafood importer, which already has a successful history of sourcing lobster from Belize. The meeting explored further commercial opportunities and signaled strong interest in Belizean shrimp.
This approval marks a significant achievement in the Belize–Taiwan partnership and underscores the value of deepening trade and economic cooperation between both countries under the ECA.
