Belize River Valley farmers strengthen soil management skills through training

By Zoila Palma:  Ten farmers from communities across the Belize River Valley participated in a Farmer-to-Farmer Training under the Soil Doctors Program on August 20, gaining practical knowledge and skills in sustainable soil management.

The hands-on training focused on helping farmers better understand soil, one of agriculture’s most important resources.

Participants learned about key chemical and physical properties, including soil structure, texture, pH, and nutrient availability, and how these factors affect soil fertility, crop growth, and overall farm productivity.

The training was facilitated by lead farmers Peter Odinga and Marcela Williams, who shared practical knowledge and field-based experience with participants.

Farmers also received soil-testing kits and technical training materials to help them apply the lessons directly in their fields and share the knowledge with other producers.

The Ministry of Agriculture explained that the Farmer-to-Farmer approach is designed to strengthen knowledge-sharing among producers, allowing practical lessons to be applied and multiplied within communities.
