By Zoila Palma: Education leaders, government ministers, and global experts gathered this week in San Pedro Sula for the 11th Latin America and Caribbean Forum to Transform School Meals, a high-level event focused on advancing sustainable, nutritious, and resilient school feeding programs across the region.
Belize was proudly represented by Chief Education Officer Yolanda Gongora, who shared the country’s achievements and ongoing efforts to enhance student nutrition through its National Healthy Start Feeding Program.
Originally launched as a pilot serving just 500 students per day, the program has seen remarkable growth.
Today, it provides free, nutritious meals to 14,600 students across 56 primary schools and 22 high schools nationwide.
Belize’s model aligns with international best practices, emphasizing sustainability, local food sourcing, and holistic child development.
In her remarks, Gongora highlighted Belize’s strong commitment to student well-being and the transformative role of school feeding in improving attendance, performance, and long-term health outcomes.
