By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize has strongly rejected claims made by the Government of Guatemala regarding recent incidents at the Sarstoon River, which occurred between September 10 and 13. Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement accusing Guatemala’s Government of presenting “alternative facts in order to seek to distort the narrative of what transpired at the Sarstoon.”

Belize reaffirmed its sovereignty over its side of the Sarstoon River and Sarstoon Island, citing: “The Sarstoon Island lies squarely within Belize’s sovereign territory. Furthermore, the 1859 Treaty provides that the channels of the river are equally free and open to the vessels of both countries.”

The Government notes that the Guatemalan claim is currently before the International Court of Justice for adjudication and final settlement. Belize looks forward to the vindication of its position and emphasizes the importance of both countries refraining from actions that may exacerbate the dispute.

Belize further refutes Guatemala’s assertions that the Belize Defence Force acted provocatively, pointing to publicly available videos that demonstrate the professionalism and restraint of Belize’s military personnel.

According to the statement, “The tensions of the past week underscore the urgency of a mechanism for cooperation in the Sarstoon and maritime spaces. Finalizing such a mechanism would be a clear demonstration of the commitment of the two countries to peace and security in the area.”

Belize is committed to strengthening and expanding bilateral relations with Guatemala based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has also expressed support for Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging Guatemala to desist from illegally entering Belizean territory
