Belize Red Cross appeals for donations to aid Caribbean neighbors affected by Hurricane Beryl

By Horace Palacio: The Belize Red Cross is urgently calling upon the generosity of Belizeans to provide financial assistance to the Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Beryl. While Belize was spared, Grenada, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Barbados, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and the Cayman Islands suffered significant damage.

Hurricane Beryl, an unprecedented Category 5 storm in the Atlantic Ocean, ravaged the region starting on July 1st. Carriacou, Grenada experienced a direct hit as a Category 4 hurricane, resulting in the destruction or damage of 95% of homes. In the southern Grenadines, 100% of homes were affected, leaving many without access to basic services and communications.

The hurricane’s path continued through the western Caribbean, making landfall in Jamaica as a Category 4 storm on July 3rd. The impact was widespread, causing displacement, flooding, and the destruction of infrastructure, homes, schools, and farms.

With at least eleven lives lost and substantial damage to property and vital sectors like maritime, transport, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries, thousands remain in shelters across the affected islands. Many are still without essential services and communication.

Individuals and organizations in Belize wishing to contribute can send donations to the Belize Red Cross Society through their Heritage Bank Limited Disaster Account #1082665. The appeal will be open from July to November 2024.

International donors can contribute via wire transfer to the Belize Red Cross through Citibank N.A. and Crown Agents Bank. Detailed instructions for international donations are available through the Belize Red Cross.
