By Horace Palacio: In his New Year’s address, Prime Minister John Briceno proudly announced a historic milestone for Belize in 2023: the nation achieved a record level of employment, with over 183,000 Belizeans gainfully employed. This achievement, as noted by Prime Minister Briceno, signifies an unprecedented employment rate in Belize’s history, with an impressive 96% of job-seeking Belizeans finding employment.
Reflecting on the government’s economic strategies, Prime Minister Briceno credited these milestones to the effective policies and initiatives implemented. A key factor in this success was the increase in the minimum wage, which positively impacted 42,865 Belizeans by enhancing their earning potential. As Prime Minister Briceno highlighted, key sectors including tourism, construction, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centers, and agriculture have experienced substantial growth, playing a pivotal role in the nation’s economic development and job creation.
In his report, Prime Minister Briceno underscored the robustness of Belize’s economy, pointing to a 3.4% expansion in the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the third quarter of the year. He especially emphasized the service sector, particularly tourism, which saw a remarkable 27% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This surge in tourism, as Prime Minister Briceno noted, is one of the highest quarter-to-quarter increases since the COVID pandemic’s conclusion.
Looking to the future, Prime Minister Briceno expressed optimism for 2024, predicting it to be a banner year for Belize’s tourism industry. He announced new initiatives like the introduction of a direct JetBlue flight from New York and increased flight frequencies from various US cities, which are expected to further boost the sector. Under his leadership, the government is committed to enhancing product quality assurance, increasing infrastructure spending, and expanding marketing efforts to fully capitalize on this growth potential.
Emphasizing the significance of a nation at work, Prime Minister Briceno reaffirmed the government’s intention to maintain a robust economy in 2024. The national productivity report’s findings and the anticipated growth in tourism, as he pointed out, signal a strong and resilient economy, ready for continued success in the upcoming year.
Prime Minister Briceno’s address concluded with a reflection on the broader impact of these achievements. The strides made in employment and economic growth are more than mere statistics; they represent a fundamental improvement in the lives of thousands of Belizeans. These accomplishments, as Prime Minister Briceno emphasized, reflect the government’s dedication to creating opportunities and fostering an environment where every citizen has the chance to find meaningful work and contribute to Belize’s prosperity.
