By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Ministry of Health and Wellness says 19 cases of measles have been identified in Belize so far this year.
The four most recent cases were detected in October in the Cayo District.
All 19 patients have recovered, according to the Ministry. Contact tracing, ring vaccination and community outreach are continuing.
The Ministry is reminding the public that measles is a highly contagious and serious viral illness that can lead to long term complications.
Symptoms usually appear 7 to 21 days after contact with an infected person. The illness starts with a high fever, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash that begins at the hairline and spreads down to the chest, back, limbs and the rest of the body.
People with measles are contagious from four days before to four days after the rash appears.
The Ministry is urging anyone who is not vaccinated to visit their nearest health facility to get the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Anyone with a fever and rash, or who suspects measles, should seek medical care at the nearest health facility or call the Ministry of Health hotline at 0-800-MOH-CARE (0-800-664-2273).
