By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s year-to-date inflation rate for the first five months of 2025 stood at 1.5%, compared to the same period in 2024, according to data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The increase was largely driven by rising costs in three key categories:

Food prices rose across the board, with noticeable hikes for fresh fruits, bread and bakery products, and beverages such as fruit juices, purified water, and soft drinks.

In housing-related expenses, higher home rental rates and increased LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) prices contributed to the upward trend. Meanwhile, the personal care category saw price jumps in items like deodorants, lotions, perfumes, shampoos, and other hygiene products.

Other notable increases included:

However, these increases were partly offset by declines in other areas.

The transport category fell 1.0%, thanks to lower fuel prices, while information and communication costs dropped 1.7%, with cheaper mobile phones and TVs.
