By Zoila Palma: Animal hygiene products valued at more than $110,000 Belize dollars were delivered on Wednesday, October 29, to the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) to support national efforts in controlling cases of the New World Screwworm (NWS).
The Ministry noted that the supplies were procured through regional emergency funds for NWS response under OIRSA (Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria) and authorized by CIRSA.
The donation includes essential veterinary products such as Ivermectin, Cypermethrin, and Ciperclor, which will be used by agricultural and veterinary officials to treat and manage suspected cases of the parasitic infestation in livestock. Additionally, protective coveralls were handed over to MAFSE to assist field technicians responding to affected areas.
Officials emphasized that these medications are strictly for official veterinary use and will not be distributed to the general public. Their controlled application ensures effective management of the outbreak while preventing misuse or overexposure.
In the coming days, BAHA (Belize Agricultural Health Authority) and OIRSA technicians are also expected to receive similar supplies to strengthen ongoing surveillance and treatment efforts across the country.
