By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Under-17 Women’s National Team bounced back from their initial loss to Costa Rica and dispatched Guatemala 3-1 in an intense match on Wednesday at the first-ever Central American U17 Women’s Championship. Belize won 25-17, 25-21, 26-28, 25-21 in their second game at Nicaragua’s Institute of Sports Volleyball Gymnasium (IND) in Managua where the tournament, organized by the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL), is being held.
Team Belize celebrated jubilantly on winning the last point that gave them the much-anticipated victory.
Belize gained 41 points in attack to Guatemala’s 34. Belize also outplayed Guatemala in blocks (10-4) but lost ground in serving aces (11-13).
Belize earned 39 points from Guatemala’s unforced errors while conceding 36.
Akili Jones led Belize in scoring, totaling 27 points to her credit. Amaun Marin posted 19, while Guatemala’s Melissa Guerra earned 13.
Belize was coming off an initial loss to Costa Rica 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) in the opener on Tuesday. Guatemala, on the other hand, dropped Honduras 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21).
Belize and Guatemala are now both 1-1.
Nicaragua were also dominant on Tuesday, blasting El Salvador 3-0 (25-12, 25-09, 25-19).
Costa Rica are leading El Salvador in the second Wednesday game which started at 4:00 pm. Nicaragua will close against Honduras at 6:30 pm.
