By Zoila Palma: Belize was represented by Agriculture Minister Rodwell Ferguson, at the 39th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LARC39), held in Brasília from March 2 to 6.
The conference brought together representatives from 32 member states to define priorities and strategic actions for transforming agrifood systems, focusing on eradicating hunger, building climate resilience, and mobilizing investments across the region.
During the Ministerial Roundtable on agrifood systems transformation, Minister Ferguson emphasized the urgent need for innovation and resilience measures to address mounting climate and production risks.
Highlighting Belize’s experience, he pointed to ongoing threats to sugar cane, banana, and citrus production, stressing the importance of technical cooperation and regional support to tackle emerging plant diseases. Ferguson also advocated for digital and technological solutions, including precision agriculture, biotechnology, early warning systems, and data-driven decision-making.
The FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Rene Orellana Halkyer, reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting member states in implementing priorities such as strengthening food security, advancing technological innovation, mobilizing investments, and promoting sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.
A final report adopted by consensus at the conference established a regional roadmap to guide actions over the coming biennium.
Key outcomes from LARC39 included the need to intensify efforts to eradicate hunger, strengthen evidence-based policies, accelerate sustainable practices, and reinforce regional cooperation and multilateralism.
