By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Premier Basketball League’s Mayan Cup Finals tip off this Friday, September 5, as the Western Ballaz welcome the Belize City Thunderbolts to the Sacred Heart College Auditorium for Game 1 of a best-of-three series. Tipoff is set for 9:00 pm, with both teams battling for a coveted spot in the BPBL Jaguars Cup Final.
The winner of this series will advance to face the Toucan Conference champion, where the San Pedro Tiger Sharks and the EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers are set to clash in their own best-of-three showdown. That matchup will determine who joins the Mayan Conference winner in the BPBL Jaguars Cup Final, setting the stage for a national showdown that crowns Belize’s top club.
Game 2 shifts to the Belize City Civic Center on Sunday, September 7 at 5:00 pm, where the Thunderbolts will look to capitalize on home-court advantage. If the series is tied, Game 3 returns to San Ignacio on Saturday, September 13, again at 9:00 pm, for a decisive clash.
The Ballaz enter as the Mayan Conference’s top seed, led by Arik Nicholas, the BPBL Scoring Champion, and Darnell Oden, the league’s Best Sixth Man. Their inside-out chemistry, defensive discipline, and playoff experience make them a formidable opponent on home court.
The Thunderbolts counter with elite production and rising confidence. Glency Lopez, the BPBL MVP, commands the offense with poise and precision, while Matthew Young, the league’s Rebounding Champion, controls the glass and anchors the paint. After sweeping the Belmopan City Kings in the semifinals, the Thunderbolts arrive in San Ignacio with momentum and belief.
With star power on both sides, fans can expect a high-intensity series.
