By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL) on Friday announced its official league structure for its first season which tips off on Friday, May 16. The BPBL, a semi-professional league aiming to elevate the basketball scene in Belize, has introduced a unique divisional breakdown and championship format.
The league is split into two divisions: the North-South (Toucan) Division and the East-West (Mayan) Division. The Toucan Division features four teams—San Pedro Tiger Sharks, EZ Investment Dangriga Dream Ballers, Punta Gorda Panthers, and Corozal Cerros Suns. Meanwhile, the Mayan Division comprises three teams—Cayo Western Ballaz, Belize City Thunderbolts, and Belmopan Capital City Kings.
Regular season play will see all teams compete for playoff seeding. The top seed in each division earns a direct berth to its respective divisional championship series. Teams seeded second and third will battle in a three-game series for a chance to advance. The divisional championships are also set as three-game series, with the winners claiming the Toucan Cup and Mayan Cup, respectively. Both divisional champions will secure a cash prize of $5,000 and their spot in the ultimate showdown: the Jaguar Cup.
The Jaguar Cup Championship is the highlight of the season—a three-game series set in a Super Bowl-style event at a premier wooden court stadium. The host venue will be determined via random selection on the opening night of the season, May 16, 2025. Potential venues include the Belize City Civic Center, the Russel ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga, and the Punta Gorda Sporting Auditorium in Punta Gorda. The BPFL expects that down the road every district will have a wooden court facility and will be able to host the Jaguar Cup.
The stakes are high for teams competing in the Jaguar Cup, as the champion will take home a grand prize of $15,000, a championship trophy, and 20 commemorative golden rings for players and staff—a fitting reward for the season’s best.
