Belize Premier Basketball League: Punta Gorda Panthers secure first win, play rematch against Suns Saturday night

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Punta Gorda Panthers earned their first victory of the Premier Basketball League of Belize season with an 84-71 win over the Corozal Cerros Suns on Friday night. The Panthers, now 1-1, controlled the game with strong performances on both ends of the court, while the Suns fell to 1-2 after their opening win.

With this result, the Panthers go into Saturday night’s rematch as favourites when they again host the Suns at the Punta Gorda Sporting Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.

Panthers take control

Full stats for the PG Panthers aren’t available at the moment as the BPBL have been experiencing technological glitches, but for now we know Chance Leslie scored 11 points, a rebound, and a steal. Kevin Hamilton added six points.

Defensively, Dane Bradley was a force with 3 steals, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds, disrupting Corozal’s offensive rhythm. Jovannie White contributed a steal, while Ray Cruz and Chance Leslie added one each, ensuring the Panthers kept control of the game.

On the Suns’ side, Brandon Rogers led the way, scoring 16 points and pulling down 8 rebounds while adding an assist. Greg Rudon contributed 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists, proving critical in maintaining the offensive flow. However, the visitors struggled against Punta Gorda’s defensive pressure.

Marquis Williams played a key role with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Isienie Velasquez rounded out the offensive leaders with 7 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

Belmopan Capital City Kings win other Friday night game

In the other Friday night matchup, the Belmopan Capital City Kings secured their first win of the season with an 85-75 victory over the Belize City Thunderbolts. The Thunderbolts, after starting the season 2-0, have now lost three straight and stand at 2-3, while the Kings improved to 1-2.
