By Zoila Palma: Belize has been identified as a key player in advancing regional food security, with strong agricultural performance and ongoing investments placing the country at the forefront of CARICOM’s agenda.
During the opening ceremony of the National Agriculture and Trade Show 2026, Minister of Agriculture, Guyana & Chairman of the CARICOM Ministerial Task Force Zulfikar Mustapha praised Belize’s contributions, noting, “Belize has long been recognized as one of the agricultural powerhouses of our region.”
He emphasized Belize’s strategic importance in reducing the Caribbean’s reliance on food imports.
“With a national target of over 2.2 million tonnes in food import replacement by 2030, Belize stands at the forefront of regional efforts,” Mustapha said.
Highlighting regional progress, he added, “The region has already recorded encouraging progress, including significant growth in agricultural production in recent years.”
The remarks come as CARICOM pushes forward its goal of cutting the food import bill by 25 percent while strengthening regional production systems.
