By Aaron Humes: Former People’s United Party (PUP) representative for Cayo West, Jorge ‘Milin’ Espat, has come forward claiming he was fired upon while inspecting his property near the Belize-Guatemala border on March 26. In a post to social media, Espat detailed the incident, stating he was walking along his land adjacent to the border when shots were allegedly fired from the Guatemalan side. No injuries were reported in the incident, and it remains unclear who was responsible for the gunfire.
Belize police have indicated that Espat has yet to file an official report concerning the incident. ASP Stacy Smith, who is a staff officer with the Belize Police Department, stated, “I have spoken to the officer in command of Benque Viejo town, who has advised me that he became aware of this situation via social media. He confirmed that Espat did not make any report to the [Benque Viejo] police station and the commander indicated that he will be reaching out to Espat to get his commentary on it. The commander of Benque Viejo also told me that he had reached out to the officials in the bordering town of Suchitan, I believe, and they in fact confirmed that there was a disturbance, but they did not provide much information.”
In his Facebook statement, Espat wrote, “I own a property…which borders the adjacency zone with Guatemala…it is my right to walk my land whichever way I please and also to carry my licensed firearm as long as I am in Belize territory…I was walking the area close to the adjacency zone, when someone on the Guatemalan side started firing shots. Someone called the Guat Police, who responded very quickly, and made a courteous approach to us to see if everything was okay.”
