Belize Police Officers participate in Police Sensitization Session on Vulnerable Populations

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last year, the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries hosted the first ever Police Sensitization Session on Vulnerable Populations. 

The Ministry says that the initiative provided an opportunity for senior officers to be actively included in discussions as well as participate in practical exercises to better understand the experiences of our vulnerable communities.

“We hope to expand on this initiative to build capacity amongst the police department in dealing with vulnerable populations, enhance the competencies and responsiveness of service to uphold and safeguard the dignity of vulnerable populations who come either in contact or in conflict with law enforcement and to raise internal and partnership awareness in respect of the dignity of vulnerable populations,” the Ministry noted.

The Ministry extended gratitude to partners of the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples Affairs, the Mental Health Association, Autism Belize, Tikkun Olam Belize, United Belize Advocacy Movement and the Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities who facilitated and delivered interactive sessions. 

“It is our hope that together we can help law enforcement officials be better equipped to deliver quality service to all populations,” the Ministry added.
