Belize Police Department launches Highway Interdiction team

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Police Department and the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries announced the launch of the Highway Interdiction Team (HIT).

This newly established police unit aims to strengthen law enforcement efforts on Belize’s highways nationwide.

The primary responsibility of the Highway Interdiction Team is to deter and combat unlawful activities, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, human trafficking, and the illegal trafficking of firearms and ammunition.

The team will coordinate with the department’s Mobile Interdiction Team on that responsibility.

The HIT will also partner with local traffic policing efforts and the Ministry of Transport to address driving under the influence of alcohol and other unsafe behaviors on Belize’s highways.
