Belize Police Department introduces new unit: Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Police Department has announced a major restructuring of its approach to gang violence and serious crime with the creation of a new Violence Prevention and Enforcement Team (VPAET).

According to a memo from the Office of the Commissioner of Police, the unit will include the Special Patrol Unit (Eastern Division), including the San Pedro Special Patrol Unit, and will operate as a separate national unit under the command of Assistant Superintendent of Police Rodney Jones.

The newly established VPAET will be responsible for the coordinated management of high-risk offenders through targeted monitoring, preventive patrols, proactive engagement and focused enforcement operations aimed at disrupting criminal leadership, deterring violent crime and reducing serious offenses.

ASP Jones will report to Senior Superintendent Christopher Noble, who has been assigned overall supervisory responsibility for the Leadership Intelligence Unit, the Gang Intelligence, Investigation and Interdiction Unit (GI3), and the VPAET.

Police said bringing the three units under a single command will strengthen operational coordination, improve information sharing, eliminate duplication of efforts and provide a more effective response to gang violence and other serious criminal threats.
