By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, the Belize People’s Front (BPF) issued a strong statement criticizing the government of Belize for its recent actions against teachers and public servants amid ongoing economic struggles.
The BPF condemned what it described as a “neo-colonial” approach driven by neoliberal ideology, which they argue perpetuates inequality and keeps the working class at the bottom of the economic ladder. “Denying teachers their negotiated increments and attempting to penalize union protests is a clear attempt to suppress dissent and preserve a failing pyramid economy,” the statement read.
The BPF expressed concern over the government’s decision to impose a phased 4.8 percent salary increase on teachers, describing it as insufficient and unjust.
They also criticized the government’s move to summon teachers to court as part of efforts to crush protest movements. “This fascist-style approach to repress union activism reveals a government that has lost its moral compass and is more interested in scapegoating unions than addressing the real economic issues facing ordinary Belizeans,” the statement said.
Moreover, the BPF denounced the government’s prioritization of the political elite’s interests over those of ordinary citizens. They called for austerity measures to be applied across government, including reducing ministerial salaries, cutting costs on political appointments, and halting expensive purchases such as new vehicles. “If the government cannot afford to give teachers their rightful increments, then they should start by cutting luxuries for the political class,” the statement declared. The front emphasized that genuine economic reform must focus on supporting public servants and reinvesting in the education system.
The Belize People’s Front concluded by urging Prime Minister John Briceño to rethink his government’s priorities.
“The greatest service a government can provide is ensuring a dignified living for all its citizens,” they asserted. “If we are serious about building a fairer, more equitable Belize, then austerity measures and repression must be replaced with policies that foster social justice and genuine development from the bottom up.”
