Belize People’s Front calls on PM Briceño for strong response to Guatemalan aggression

By Zoila Palma: The Belize People’s Front is urging Prime Minister John Briceño to adopt a firmer stance against Guatemala following what it describes as ongoing acts of aggression and territorial violations.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, party leader Nefretery Nancy Marin highlighted recent Guatemalan military activity in the Sarstoon region and illegal incursions in the Chiquibul Forest, warning that these “acts of aggression are not isolated incidents—they are sanctioned at the highest levels of the Guatemalan Government.”

Marin recounted her personal experiences witnessing Guatemalan actions in Belizean territory, including an incident six years ago on Sarstoon Island when Guatemalan Armed Forces removed a Belizean flag she had placed there.

“Since then, their level of aggression has only escalated—far beyond symbolic gestures and into the realm of militarized intimidation,” she wrote. She also cited her observations during four years with Friends for Conservation and Development, noting “illegal Guatemalan incursions… including logging, poaching, gold panning, and the establishment of settlements—all of which have caused serious environmental degradation and threats to our national security.”

The letter calls for an assertive national response, urging the government to increase patrols and monitoring along the western border, the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, and the Sarstoon River.

Marin also recommends issuing a formal diplomatic warning to Guatemala and considering potential diplomatic consequences if aggression continues.

She further announced her personal withdrawal from participation in Manufexport 2025, a trade event in Guatemala, stating: “I refuse to support a government that continues to threaten the sovereignty of my country.”

Marin concluded by emphasizing unity and strength, asserting that “Belize must send a clear, unwavering message that our independence is not up for negotiation, and our territory is not for intimidation.”
