The Government of Belize participated in two high-level regional meetings held from April 6-8, 2025, in Georgetown, Guyana, aimed at advancing key labour priorities across the Caribbean.
These meetings were hosted by the Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean, and the CARICOM Secretariat.
On April 6, 2025, a Senior Officials Meeting was held to prepare and finalize key documents for the ministerial session. This was followed by the meeting of Caribbean Ministers of Labour on April 7, 2025, which convened Ministers and Senior Officials from across the region to address emerging labour market challenges and explore opportunities for enhanced regional cooperation. The meeting provided a platform to assess progress in promoting decent work and aligning labour policies in the response to evolving economic and environmental conditions.
On April 8, 2025, the Thirty-Fourth Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) – Labour, led by the CARICOM Secretariat, facilitated further high-level discussions. The meeting was attended by His Excellency Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director General of the ILO, who engaged with Ministers on major developments, including the proposed restructuring of ILO governance, regional Just Transition strategies, and coordinated preparations for the upcoming International Labour Conference in June 2025.
Belize’s delegation was led by Hon. Florencio Marin Jr., Minister of Labour, and included Mr. Valentino Shal, Chief Executive Officer, and Mrs. Rissela Dominguez-Patt, Labour Commissioner.
The meetings provided Belize with the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation, social protection, and the Decent Work Country Programme while emphasizing the importance of unified Caribbean positions and continued ILO support in addressing the evolving labour challenges.
