By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): As the CARICOM Free Movement of Persons marks its first month in effect, Belizean immigration officials say the rollout has been smooth and well-received, though actual migration remains limited.
The initiative, launched on October 1, 2025, allows citizens of participating CARICOM countries to move freely across borders for work, study, or residence. Critics had raised concerns that the policy could strain local economies, but the government maintains that it will strengthen regional unity and economic collaboration.
Tanya Santos, CEO at the Ministry of Immigration, said most of the initial movement has been from Barbados, and feedback from travelers has been overwhelmingly positive.
“They like the process and feel part of Belize now that they’re here,” Santos said. “We expect it to be a smooth process. Belize has always been a welcoming country.”
Officials say the slow start is not unexpected and that the long-term goal is to make regional integration a reality through steady growth, understanding, and cooperation.
