By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Network of NGOs (BNN) has joined calls for Ambassador Alexis Rosado to step down from his role as Belize’s Co-Agent before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), insisting that public officials must be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
In a press release dated October 26, 2026, the organization said individuals entrusted with public responsibilities must protect public confidence, particularly when facing serious criminal charges or allegations.
BNN cited Section 121 of the Belize Constitution, which addresses standards of conduct and integrity in public office.
The organization argued that Belize needs standardized protocols allowing for the temporary removal of public officials from their duties while serious criminal matters are being determined by the courts.
According to BNN, such measures should not be interpreted as declarations of guilt but as safeguards for public confidence.
The organization specifically supported calls for Rosado to step aside from Belize’s ICJ team.
Rosado has been facing criminal proceedings involving allegations of sexual offences against a minor. He remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
The statement came on the same day the Government of Belize officially confirmed Rosado’s resignation as Co-Agent, effective October 26.
BNN’s release did not acknowledge the resignation, and it is unclear whether the organization issued its statement before the Government’s announcement.
The organization emphasized that public accountability must apply consistently to individuals serving in official capacities, regardless of their positions or responsibilities.
BNN also reaffirmed its commitment to good governance, transparency and protecting the integrity of public institutions.
