By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the 12th Central American Games get underway in Guatemala, Belize’s delegation was officially confirmed following a challenging, fast-moving but prolonged registration process on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. According to Head of Mission Herman Pastor, Belize will compete in 16 disciplines out of the 55 featured in this year’s regional event.

The process, which began at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, stretched late into the night and was only finalized at 11:00 pm, when the full delegation was confirmed. “Now it’s just for the athletes to arrive when their time comes,” Pastor said. “But it was certainly drawn out.”

While the first wave of athletes has already arrived in Guatemala City, additional teams are expected to join in the coming days as final logistics are confirmed. Pastor, who also serves as Vice President of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, acknowledged that the registration process was anything but straightforward.

“We almost didn’t make it in some of the disciplines. They gave us a hard time with the late registrations,” Pastor explained. “Some athletes withdrew at the last minute, and we had to make substitutions. But the system didn’t make it easy — registering replacements was a real challenge as some were not in the long list.”

Among the teams that faced uncertainty was the men’s basketball squad, which only secured approval late Tuesday night after resolving a roster issue.

“They had nine players, because they didn’t have a couple of their players. We needed ten, so it was a scramble,” Pastor said.

Pastor said they had a similar problem with beach volleyball but managed to resolve it.

Similar registration hurdles affected other disciplines, with some athletes from across Central America also struggling to complete their entries.

“It’s not just us — other countries had trouble too,” Pastor noted.

Despite the complications, Belize’s delegation is now confirmed across the following 16 disciplines:

  • Aquatics
  • Basketball (Men)
  • Billiards
  • Canoeing
  • Cycling
  • Fencing
  • Golf
  • Judo
  • Sailing
  • Rugby
  • Softball (Men and Women)
  • Taekwondo
  • Tennis
  • Triathlon
  • Volleyball (Men and Women)
  • Weightlifting

As Belize’s athletes continue to arrive and settle in, the delegation remains focused on representing the country with pride and determination. With competition already underway in several disciplines, Team Belize is ready to make its mark.
