By Zoila Palma: The Belize Nature Conservation Foundation (BNCF) has awarded BZ$100,000 in grants to two co-management organizations for Belize’s protected areas.
Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (MBWS) and the Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation Development (SACD) each received BZ$50,000 to support conservation efforts.
MBWS will use the funds to improve management and enforcement at Monkey Bay National Park, focusing on combatting illegal activities and wildfires.
SACD will enhance protection and surveillance at Bacalar Chico National Park, with plans to operationalize the San Juan Ranger Station by 2025.
BNCF Chairman, Leonardo Chavarria, highlighted the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to funding impactful conservation projects. Since its establishment in 2001, BNCF has awarded nearly BZ$1.9 million in grants for biodiversity research, community engagement, and infrastructure improvements.
The BNCF is funded through the Tropical Forest Conservation Agreement, a debt-for-nature swap between Belize and the USA.
