By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) has issued a statement calling on the Government of Belize to show meaningful action in an effort to resolve the sugar dispute.
The BNTU expressed support to the sugar cane farmers of the North, many of whom are also BNTU members, who have been requesting a formalized document that outlines palatable terms of agreement with ASR/BSI for this current and future crop seasons.
“It has been far too long that the cries of our cañeros are seemingly being ignored. We therefore wish to call on the Government of Belize to engage meaningfully to assist in this process so as to ensure that the interests of our people are adequately considered and addressed,” the BNTU stated.
The BNTU says that it stands ready to lend whatever technical support is necessary to expeditiously resolve this matter at the negotiations table.
“Let us all put shoulder to the wheel, so that this current and future crop season can successfully commence without a repeat of this perennial saga,” the BNTU expressed.
