By Zoila Palma:  The Belize National Library Service and Information System (BNLSIS) and The Amandala Newspaper have signed a Digitization and Public Access Agreement aimed at preserving and expanding access to the newspaper’s historic records.

The agreement, signed on September 8, 2026, will allow historical issues held at the National Heritage Library to be digitized and made more accessible for research, education and historical reference.

Since its establishment in 1969, Amandala has played a significant role in Belizean public life, documenting political debates, social movements, cultural identity and issues affecting Belizeans.

BNLSIS Chief Librarian Lusiola Castillo said the newspaper provides a distinctive perspective on Belize’s development that complements records available through other archival and official sources in the National Heritage Library’s collection.

Castillo expressed gratitude to Amandala Chairman and Owner Evan X Hyde for allowing the newspaper’s historical record to become part of the digital collection.

She said the agreement will expand access beyond the physical library, allowing researchers, students and Belizeans at home and abroad to discover and consult the resource.

Under the agreement, BNLSIS will digitize Amandala issues currently held at the National Heritage Library and will continue receiving future digital editions of the newspaper.

BNLSIS described the initiative as an important step toward expanding access to Belize’s documentary heritage and preserving the diverse voices and perspectives captured in the country’s newspapers for future generations.
