By Aaron Humes: The Cabinet has approved a significant overhaul of local government laws, aiming to modernize and streamline the governance structure of municipal authorities in Belize. This move is expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the two city and seven town councils.
The amalgamation of the Belize City and Belmopan City Council Acts and the Town Councils Act into a single Municipal Government Act is intended to provide better governance and greater uniformity across municipal authorities. The Cabinet has also approved the modernization and amalgamation of accounting regulations governing financial and accounts management of City and Town Councils, ensuring increased efficiency and effectiveness.
In addition to local government reforms, the Cabinet has given its approval for the Ministry of Local Government to advance an initiative to modernize and amend the Intoxicating Liquor License Act. This aims to improve the administration and control of liquor sales and consumption in Belize, with potential updates to licensing regulations, following updates to hours of service during Easter and Christmas time.
The boundaries of each of Belize’s towns and cities were redrawn and in some cases expanded, drawing more people into the area of service. Notably, elections for each Town and City Council are held simultaneously every three years since 2003 after previously being held separately.
