Belize mourns loss of Educator and Scholar Dr. Dorian A. Barrow

By Zoila Palma:  Belize is mourning the passing of respected educator, scientist, and public intellectual Dr. Dorian A. Barrow, whose lifelong dedication to education and national development touched generations of Belizeans.

Dr. Barrow passed away after battling complications affecting his liver and kidneys. In recent months, he had been undergoing dialysis, and members of the public had rallied behind him through a blood donation appeal in support of his treatment.

Galen University

Dr. Barrow devoted more than five decades to advancing education in Belize. His career began in 1976 as a Science and Mathematics teacher at St. Michael’s College, where he later became principal. He went on to lecture at the Belize College of Arts, Sciences and Technology (BELCAST), St. Catherine Academy, the University College of Belize, the University of Belize, the University of the West Indies, and Galen University.

He also served as Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Education, where he played a pivotal role in the creation of the University of Belize and helped secure Galen University’s charter in 2002. Most recently, he served as Director of Galen University’s STEM, AI, and Robotics Center and lecturer in its Faculty of Education, where he championed innovation in science education and mentored countless students and educators.

At Galen’s commencement exercise on Sunday, July 12, Galen University honored Dr. Barrow with its prestigious President’s Award for Excellence, recognizing his extraordinary service, leadership, and lifelong contributions to education and Belizean society.

During the tribute, the university described him as a mentor, colleague, and friend whose integrity, compassion, and commitment to learning had transformed lives.

The award was accepted on his behalf by his daughter, Celine Barrow.

The university praised his work in establishing the STEM, AI, and Robotics Center, developing teacher education programmes, and shaping national education policy, calling his legacy one of “knowledge, service, and hope.”

Beyond academia, Dr. Barrow was an influential voice in national discourse.

He frequently wrote commentaries published on Breaking Belize News on issues affecting Belize and contributed thoughtful analysis to public debate.

Colleagues, former students, and friends remember him not only for his academic achievements but also for his humility, wisdom, and unwavering belief that education has the power to transform lives. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of Belizeans.
