By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño on Friday joined Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo in signing the Calakmul Declaration for the Biocultural Corridor of the Great Mayan Forest. The landmark agreement unites Belize, Mexico, and Guatemala in protecting one of the largest remaining tropical forests in the Americas, second only to the Amazon.
The signing, held in Calakmul, Campeche, comes after years of discussion on sustainable development, ecotourism, and cultural preservation in the shared forest corridor. Speaking in Spanish at the event, Prime Minister Briceño emphasized the importance of the agreement for environmental protection and regional cooperation.
“This is probably one of the most important things that we can accomplish,” PM Briceño said. “It is considered probably the second or the largest reserve after the Amazon, coming this way.”
The initiative seeks to boost conservation efforts, open new markets through sustainable trade, and strengthen cross-border environmental management. Leaders from all three countries expressed optimism that the agreement will serve as a model for international collaboration in biodiversity protection.
