By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) are on their way back home after Wednesday’s tough 1-0 World Cup qualifier loss to Montserrat in Trinidad and Tobago. After leaving Trinidad on Thursday afternoon, BMNT are expected to arrive in Belize on Friday, regrouping ahead of their final World Cup qualifying match against Panama on Saturday at 7:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
After struggling through their first three matches without earning any points, BMNT now face their biggest challenge against Panama, considered the strongest team in Group D. Led by Uruguayan coach Daniel Bartolotta and his son, Mexican coach Diego Bartolotta (who played for Premier League of Belize’s Belmopan FC last season), the squad will look to put on a solid performance in front of their home crowd.
With criticism mounting, especially after the Montserrat defeat, BMNT know that fans are eager for results. While a competitive showing will signal progress, a victory over Panama would be the turning point the team need.
All eyes will be on BMNT at the FFB Stadium on Saturday night as they close their World Cup qualifying campaign, which so far has been disappointing, to put it mildly.
