By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A new era begins for Belizean football as the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) officially reported for training ahead of their crucial FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in June. With a renewed spirit and Mexican-based coaching at the helm, the Jaguars are sharpening their skills for two major clashes against Montserrat and Panama.

The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) shared an update on the BMNT’s training, though the official squad list has yet to be disclosed. However, photos from the camp confirmed the return of midfielders Jordy Polanco and Nahjib Guerra, who were left out of the Gold Cup Preliminary Round squad against Costa Rica. Also back, goalkeeper Charles Tillett and forward Andir Chi. Their presence signals a strengthened lineup aiming for a better international performance.

Sixteen-year-old Marlon Meza Jr also appears in one of the photos published by the FFB.

This training camp marks the first under a revamped coaching structure, which includes strategic guidance from experienced Mexican coach Enrique Meza Sr. Meza Sr is expected to oversee the work done by the group of Mexican coaching advisors who will be assisting BMNT head coach Charlie Slusher in shaping the team’s preparations, bringing decades of international expertise. The coaching advisors include Daniel Bartolotta, Diego Bartolotta, and Enrique Meza Jr., whose insights will be instrumental in refining the squad’s tactical approach. The FFB has emphasized the importance of this collaborative effort, with Daniel Bartolotta spearheading the execution of the project alongside Slusher.

Diego Bartolotta, serving as an advisor, expressed confidence in the team’s direction, highlighting the collective experience as a key factor in improving Belize’s international performance. The father-and-son duo of Bartolotta and the Mezas will work closely with the Belizean coaching staff as part of what the FFB termed ‘the Mexico-Belize Project’, which aims to elevate the national team’s competitive edge.

The upcoming matches will test the Jaguars’ resilience:
• June 4 – Montserrat vs Belize (Away)
• June 7 – Belize vs Panama (FFB Stadium, Belmopan)

With the team now locked in, the focus shifts to tactical preparations.

As the qualifiers approach, Belize’s football community watches with anticipation.
