By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) is in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend for an international friendly against the reserve squad of Major League Soccer club Atlanta United.
The match is set for Saturday, September 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, offering the Belizean squad a valuable opportunity to test its depth and cohesion against professional opposition.
The trip is sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board.
The BMNT departed Belize on Thursday, September 4 and will return on Sunday, September 7, following the weekend fixture.
The traveling players are:
• Goalkeepers: Charles Tillett, Isaac Castillo
• Defenders: Brandon Jones, Naim Wilson, Jaylen Lennan, Deshawon Nembhard
• Midfielders: Eldon Reneau, Nahjib Guerra, Alence Ayala, Marlon Meza Jr, Darrel Myvett, Gabriel Ramos, Michael Salazar, Eddie Williams
• Forwards: Carlos Bernardez, Andir Chi, Krisean Lopez, Desmond Wade
• Joining the team in Atlanta: Salazar (midfielder) and Castillo (goalkeeper)
Verdes’ Jordy Polanco was called up but didn’t make the trip as he is still injured. Woodrow West didn’t travel either.
The technical staff is led by Head Coach Carlos Slusher, with Assistant Coach Shane Orio, Goalkeeper Coach Joshua Lamb, Physical Trainer Dennis Serano, and Physiotherapist Thomas Rivars. Team logistics are managed by Melanie Matute, while FFB President Sergio Chuc serves as Head of Delegation alongside General Secretary Ian Jones.
In preparation for the Atlanta fixture, the BMNT recorded a 3–0 win over Belmopan FC in a friendly held on Wednesday night.
The match coincides with a Premier League of Belize (PLB) break, as no domestic games are scheduled this weekend due to the FIFA calendar. League action resumes on Saturday, September 13, with Belmopan FC hosting Port Layola at Isidoro Beaton Stadium.
Though the BMNT have no immediate international commitments, the Atlanta outing is expected to provide valuable match experience and tactical insight as the squad continue to build toward future regional competitions.
