By Zoila Palma: Belize’s largest carbon conservation initiative, the Belize Maya Forest Carbon Project, has officially received validation under VERRA’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard (CCBS), marking a major step forward for the country’s climate and conservation goals.
This achievement confirms the project’s compliance with rigorous environmental and social criteria and unlocks access to international carbon markets.
With the potential to generate up to 29.8 million high-integrity carbon credits, the project will secure long-term funding for forest protection, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience.
Under renegotiated terms from 2021, the Government of Belize will receive an initial BZ$1.48 million in proceeds, with further revenues expected from the sale of additional verified credits.
The initiative permanently protects over 87,000 hectares of tropical forest, prevents deforestation, safeguards water sources, and supports local communities in sustainable land management.
The Belize Maya Forest Carbon Project is a collaborative effort between the Government of Belize, the Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).
