By Zoila Palma: In observance of World Day Against Child Labour, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rosana Briceño, issued a strong call to end child exploitation and protect the rights of children globally.
“Every child deserves the freedom to learn, play, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment,” Briceño stated in her message, urging unified efforts to eliminate child labour once and for all.
The United Nations noted that this year’s observance coincides with the upcoming release of the 2025 global estimates and trends on child labour, a joint report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF.
The report is expected to provide critical insights into the progress made and the work still needed to meet international goals on ending child labour.
Despite signs of progress, the ILO emphasizes the urgency of full ratification and enforcement of ILO Conventions No. 138 on the Minimum Age and No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour.
As the world prepares for the updated data, global leaders and advocates are being called upon to intensify prevention, strengthen child protection systems, and build stronger partnerships.
The message is clear: progress has been made, but more must be done—and faster—to safeguard every child’s right to a childhood free from labour.
