Belize marks opening of Cane season

By Zoila Palma:  Belize officially marked the opening of the 2026 cane season today, with Prime Minister John Briceño joining the Minister of Agriculture and key stakeholders from the sugar industry for the ceremonial start.

The event highlighted the importance of sugar cane production to the national economy and to communities in northern Belize.

Addressing farmers and industry representatives, Prime Minister Briceño highlighted the deep social and economic significance of sugar to the country.

“Sugar is livelihood. It is economic prosperity for the nation and its people. It is tradition, it is culture — it is a way of life for Norteños,” the prime minister said.

To symbolize the start of the harvest, the prime minister and industry stakeholders took part in the traditional holding of cane.
